Settling in to the Longer Podcasts

Earlier in the day yesterday, I had a spur of the moment thought that some of us at Rising Apple ought to get on a podcast in the evening to fill the Metsian day-off void.

So, I was back in hosting duties, even with my Mets-induced hoarse voice, after a few weeks off with Mike Lecolant joining me as well. AND at the last second, Mets Musings' Gary Mack was able to call in. We recapped the weekend that gave us 2 Mets wins and one more Mets loss, no real resolution at the 1st base position, Bobby Parnell's decision to undergo Tommy John Surgery, the first replay challenge (and successful one) in Mets history, Juan Lagares and his continuing solid ABs, Curtis Granderson's first Mets home run, and plenty of other items of interest we discussed in the 93 minutes we were on air.

Also, since there is no #67 in Mets uniform history, we discussed Tom Seaver and his Rookie of the Year campaign in 1967.

I gotta say, I am REALLY liking having more time on this podcast thingy.

'Tis what 'Tis

In the case of the Mets this week, you take the split, and each a solid win at that.

I haven't even been able to watch the Mets clips of yesterday. I was in transit to Coney Island during the game to get to the ballpark early for the Ebbets Field 100th Anniversary jerseys. Besides a fantastic win by the Mets, the Cyclones beat the Yankees 2-1, with a fantastic 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

It's been a combination of more on my plate and lack of motivation to be writing about the Mets everyday, but I appreciate all of you returning when I do. I'm getting into balancing my new schedule a bit better, so there should be some more posts on the way as September rolls around.

The Rising Apple Report, and a great episode at that, is down below, and I am also going live on air with screenwriter Ron Main on the Bedford & Sullivan podcast at 1:30PM ET today. We'll discuss Ron growing up a Dodger fan in Queens, his parents' roots in Brooklyn, and his favorite player, Duke Snider. We will also discuss the current screenwriting landscape in Hollywood, as well as the film industry in general.

Rarely an Off-Day These Days

I really don't want to write too much.

I know I'll go into a rant about Terry Collins or umpiring or something, other than what I really want to focus on, which is Tuesday's game and the BOMB of an insurance run my boy Ike slammed into the Pepsi Porch.

I did plenty of ranting about a bunch of stuff with Andrew Battifarano on last night's Rising Apple Report, so just go ahead and listen to that as you settle into your Thursday.

Returning the Favor

It thrills me beyond belief that the Mets swept the Colorado Rockies after losing 8 straight to them at Citi Field (not to mention after they got swept out in Colorado, not counting that makeup game we won.)

The last time the Rockies won a game at Citi Field was Collin McHugh's Major League Debut, where he took a no-decision in the Mets 1-0 loss.

He was traded for Eric Young, Jr.

The Mets have clearly needed to win A LOT MORE at home, and it looked to be a thrilling week out in Flushing. It's not even they needed to win more....they needed to stop being 10 GAMES UNDER at home. They need to feed off the energy returning, and this series was a prime example of what it should feel like for the fan and the team at Citi Field.

Shall we take a quick look at some of the highlights?

Those uniforms are so awesome.

Hey, eh, how bout Matt Harvey's first career Shutout?

And how bout a lil pitching and small ball to get the job done?

Oh...It looks like that last game that finished the sweep with a 2-1 score does not have any embedding. Yeah, it wasn't as Baller as those last two highlight reels, but still a solid, solid win (and in those lovely blue unis with the Orange and Blue hat, too.)

It's ok, though. You all know where to find the highlights if you're craving them.

Now, it's time for a series in Phoenix. Keep it up, Metsies.

OH! I guess I can't leave this portion of the post without talking about Wilmer Flores...

The Pity Party

Before the last 2 losses, we discussed on the Rising Apple Report a bit about Matt Harvey and how everybody around much feel this extra pressure to perform for him.

You got the opposition getting geared up to face the kid, the pitcher especially upping his game.

You got the offense pressing.

You got Matt Harvey feeling no margin for error.

Yesterday pretty much summed up Matt Harvey's season, and the way the Mets produce around him. I don't know what the number of people left on base was, but I know it was outlandish by the 3rd inning alone.

Kerplunk.

I guess it should be considered a good thing that I missed a game post, and a winning one at that. Considering I'm in the last week of classes specializing in a field I expect to make a career, it's good to be distracted from the item that normally does the distracting.

Though last night, I had enough gameday in my view to be well aware of the inning that got away. I haven't seen any video or heard any audio, but I did hear that Eric Young, Jr. and Tim Hudson got into a crazy accident during the 8-2 loss. That sucks, 'cause I respect the guy, you know?

Alright, before I add last night's awesome Rising Apple Report podcast, with myself, Dan Haefeli and Rich Sparago, let's look at last night's lineup and consider its strikeout potential at the bottom.

Seriously, I don't know, but I somehow remember a bunch of them being losses...

Well, That Felt Like the Mets

Leave it to Citi Field to make the home team National League look offensively inept.

Obviously it wasn't the ballpark more than the actual offense (and, of course, the AL pitching) but there might just be something about Citi Field that radiates and latches onto the home team so they can only come up with 3 singles and no runs.

Outside of the game which was a bit of a letdown (except our Mets who did their part, with 2 scoreless innings from Matt Harvey and one of the singles from David Wright [not to mention Carlos Beltran collecting one of them as well]) this week was a METS BRANDING BONANZA.

I can't remember the All-Star Game's identity, which is always a form of the hometown team's colors and logos, selling the brand of one team so dramatically. We all knew it was Bud Selig's gift to the Wilpons to help them on their way back from Madoff, but my God. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED IT, especially how every player looked like they were in a Met uniform for the Home Run Derby and the pre-game workouts. I had just never seen one team's brand be so showcased the way the Mets were to America and the World this week. 

It was awesome.

What a Treat & the Rising Apple Report

Though I had been checking in on the eventual 7-2 Mets win a couple times yesterday, I wasn't able to truly follow it and zone out to Metsian stuff until Dan Haefeli and myself got on air for the Rising Apple Report.

Later, I was able to watch the condensed game, and Dan hits it on the head when he says in the podcast that Wheeler's secondary stuff wasn't great, but his fastball was so it didn't matter yesterday. I'm sure he had some extra juice flowin' facing his former team.

With Marlon Byrd continuing to rake (though striking out 3 times) we discussed the continually evolving market for the right fielder, as well as other places the Mets could look to deal from.

Also, did you all know that the Mets swept the Giants in SF for the 1st time since 1994?

And Omar Quintanilla made another spectacular play in the field (with a great stretch by Ike) that you should all take a look at after listening to the podcast.

Speaking of which, let's get to that.

Catching the Good Stuff

On Wednesdays, I get out of class at 10, with no moment to check the score before, mostly not to be rude.

Well, it seemed last night was easy peasy, eh?

(I'm sure it's not as little as I think, but how many 28-year-olds use the phrase, "Easy Peasy" these days?)

In another age, there is no way that Shaun Marcum doesn't get a complete-game shutout, or at least attempt to get a complete-game shutout.

We're not in that age, however, and Shaun Marcum, who, let's face it, was injured for a good portion of last year, might have lost it the way he did in the 20-inning game where the Mets had no pitchers left. Plus, Bobby Parnell hadn't pitched since Friday, and there in front of everybody was a save waiting to be had.

So, no surprise here of Terry Collins' decision. Though it would have been fun to see the man with 9 losses finish what he started for his 1st Mets win.

You know, I'm just realizing I haven't even seen one video from this game? I gotta get on that real quick...

The 9th Loss

It's been a wacky season for Shaun Marcum. He now has 9 losses, bringing his career total to 57-45. It all hasn't been because of bad pitching, considering he should have been sent home with his 1st win in what turned out to be his 7th loss against the Marlins in 20 innings. He started out clearly ineffective because of no spring training under his belt. Now, though, it's just one of those things.

Whereas the two wins by Harvey and Wheeler on Tuesday had as much to do with the overall mood and direction of this franchise than improving 2013's record, last night, regardless of a win or a loss, was mostly about the short-term, while also analyzing new players such as Eric Young, Jr., who the Mets traded for with Colorado by sending DFA'd Collin "Shut the Rockies Down" McHugh out to the Mile High City after the games on Tuesday.

The doubleheader and the roster moves were discussed prior to The 9th Loss on this week's Rising Apple Report, which unfortunately got cut off a couple minutes early due to technical difficulties on Blog Talk Radio's part.

Apparently We Need to Podcast Everyday

For the 2nd straight week, the Mets helped Gee get a win after a couple of us talked about how awful everything is on the Rising Apple Report podcast. The Mets gave us and Gee a 10-1 win after the podcast returned from a hiatus, and this week a lovely "Feeling comfortable about this 5-1 lead is a strange feeling" victory right after a podcast that had 39 innings of listless baseball very much still in the air.

It's not like all that is wrong with this team went away after one crisp win, so enjoy this week's podcast, with myself and Dan Haefeli discussing how everything's wrong and it all needs to change.

We look forward to talking about Zack Wheeler's successful debut on Tuesday in ATL on next Wednesday's podcast.

Adjusting to a New Schedule (that doesn't revolve 'round the Mets)

This past year, my schedule has been so that I've gotten more used to following the Mets for the majority of my day than following (or doing) anything else (relatively speaking.) It's been wonderful, and I have gained new skills and sharpened old ones, with my love of the Metropolitans and baseball increasing ten-fold. I have met some fantastic people in this Metsian circle, and look forward to even more excellent acquaintances.

Suddenly, and for the better, my schedule is beginning to fill up with other things besides the trials and tribulations of our favorite NY Orange and Blue team (no disrespect to the 2nd favorite, our New York Knickerbockers.) Though I know I will put it upon myself to post on a regular basis, don't be surprised if it gets quieter around these here parts moreso than at other relatively quiet times in the blog's history.

The most exciting part of my altering schedule is the time that will be filled with screenwriting courses at the New School starting in June. I am BEYOND thrilled to have been able to even register for the classes (thanks to a man who seems to find a new photo of me as a Yankee fan everyday...) and I look forward to making the most out of the learning experience.

In the short-term, today's regularly scheduled podcast has been moved to the 'morrow, and the regular schedule will become more scattered, depending on the Rising Apple team's availability episode-to-episode.
