More specifically, we'll discuss Zack Wheeler's uneven walk year...Jason Vargas's resergence, Pete Alonso's All-Star and Rookie of the Year potential, and look at whether the Subway Series is still as exciting after all these years and with the novelty of interleague play having worn off.

LIVE at 9pm ET, A Metsian Podcast, Ep. 27 - Dreaming of a Brighter June, with The Coop

At 9pm ET, A Metsian Podcast will be LIVE with our 27th episode! Taryn "The Coop" Cooper of "My Summer Family"joins us to talk about..who else? The New York Mets!
Well, with last night's win, the Mets are 1/5 of the way to matching their win total of 2018's June. Obviously, 6 wins this month will still be rather miserable, and it seems unlikely they will be as bad as they were, but Mickey Callaway and Co. have to figure out how to go through this month with a better formula for success than they have been putting together as of late. We'll discuss some strategies we think they need to take to do so, you know, other than the overall strategy of not blowing the leads they keep having.
Robinson Cano was rushed back from the IL and proceeded to re-aggravate his injured quad. Why do the Mets keep rushing these players back from injury? Have they seriously not learned by now?
That plus much, much more! Including a look at the players to wear number 27 in their history.

LIVE at 9pm ET, A Metsian Podcast Memorial Day Weekend Special - Assessing the 2019 Mets

LIVE at 9pm ET, A Metsian Podcast Memorial Day Weekend Special is here! Once more, there isn't a shortage of places to travel on this full service podcast. Gary McDonald of Mets Musings will join us for the chat!
On top of wrapping up the final results of the Nationals series, the heat was on Mickey Callaway entering the week after 5 straight losses. This prompted the "seal of approval" presser with Brodie Van Wagenen on Monday, while yet another flurry of Meddin' Jeff articles were written by the media, local and national alike. Just another year in the world of the Mets.
Injuries have lead to some shuffling of the roster. Of course, after getting heat for a perceived lack of hustle, Robinson Cano pulls a hammy legging out a double. Of course. Rajai Davis got called up after Brandon Nimmo was placed on the IL and immediately makes his presence felt with a 3-run home run to cap off a 6-run come-from-behind inning Wednesday night. What is to be expected of him and will he stick around?
Carlos Gomez has yet to truly make his presence felt with the bat though his notorious energy has been there both with on-the-field flare as well as cheerleading from the bench. He's been walking some so he hasn't been completely absent. Can he ever regain his Major League prowess?
Jeez, there's even MORE to cover! Yoenis Cespedes violently broke his ankle NOT falling off a horse, but apparently stepping incorrectly in a hole on his Port St. Lucie ranch. Is it time to completely write off him ever playing another inning for this team?
So much to cover, so little time! Join us at 9pm ET for the latest edition of A Metsian Podcast!
You can listen LIVE down below, or at the link here.

The Never-Ending Excruciation

First of all, just want to say thank you once more to Bre of That Mets Chick for coming on A Metsian Podcast last night. Great episode. Realizing I haven't been acknowledging the guest on the blog the next day, so just wanted to start the habit of do so today. If you haven't listened yet, please do so here when you get a chance.

I had my moments of following the game early, midway and the tailend. I was dropping off a Lyft passenger when the 9th inning "rally" was occurring, so naturally, after I dropped them off, I checked on the score. There on my At Bat screen was the fact the Mets had scored two runs and had the bases loaded.

Ron Sachs/CNP
Photo via https://nypost.com
On further review, however, the "final" had not been updated and the balls, strikes and outs read, "2-3, 3 out." That's called an end of the game, but the application had not finished computing quickly enough for this to be reported without still teasing me with those loaded bases. I exhaled in frustration, shook my head and went to pick up my next passenger.

My next passenger, it turned out, was wearing a Mets hat and was a die-hard fan who had turned the game off when it was 6-4 because he knew they'd lose painfully and he takes everything so seriously he knew he'd be too emotional about it for hours on end after the game. It was a long ride so we commiserated with each other about this frustrating issue and that frustrating issue. The weird thing was we did it shaking our heads with a smile on our faces. As I've said before, misery loves company.

Whether it is frustration over another injury to a star player, or a veteran star player we just got not performing the way his baseball card says. Whether it is inconsistencies in the front office or on the field. The same thing over and over again grows old, but our fandom does not. He was a man probably at least 15-30 years older than me but he still watches in September when the Mets are 20 games out. It doesn't matter that they've been doing this to him for so many years, he is going to show up and watch.

I know I will be, even when it is hard to find time to sit down and pay attention to a full game. Here I am, unable to take the Mets in like seasons before, but there's no way I'll look away. And so it goes.

Here's to the Mets. As excruciating as they can be.

KEEP. ON. PUSHIN'.
LET'S. GO. METS.

LIVE at 9pm ET, A Metsian Podcast, Ep. 26 - Bre From That Mets Chick Joins the Podcast!

LIVE at 9pm ET, episode 26 is here, and we are thrilled to welcome Bre from the blog, "That Mets Chick!" You can follow her on twitter @thatmetschick.
Bre is a 24 years old from Long Island. She fell in love with the game of baseball because of her dad and brother. She played 4 years of college softball, playing center field and right field (and had a cannon of an arm.) Her all time favorite Mets players are David Wright & Carlos Beltran, while her current favorite Mets players are Michael Conforto & Jeff McNeil. She started following the Mets in 2003 when Jose Reyes made his debut and has been following them ever since!
We'll first tackle results of the Nationals series, and will have some choice words regarding Wilmer Font being a starter right now regardless of today's outcome. He represents a budget option on a team expected to contend, so what mixed signals are the front office and the Wilpons sending here?
We'll touch on some roster issues such as Todd Frazier and Keon Broxton, and whether, with his opt out coming in June and him killing the ball in AAA, Carlos Gomez should eventually be on this team.
That and much, much more! We'll also talk the ballplayers to wear 26 in Mets history as well as the 1926 NY National League legacy.
So, join us at 9pm ET for the latest edition of A Metsian Podcast!

LIVE at 9pm ET, A Metsian Podcast, Ep. 24 - Mets Newsday Reporter Tim Healey

A Metsian Podcast with Sam, Rich and Mike comes at you LIVE at 9pm ET! We are thrilled on this episode to be welcoming Mets Newsday reporter Tim Healey to the program!
Photo via @timbhealey/twitter
Tim Healey is in his second season covering the Mets for Newsday, and before that he covered the Marlins for the South Florida Sun Sentinel. A Connecticut native and Boston University grad, Tim is a proud New Englander but has taken a liking to living in New York City.
The Reds series wraps up today at noon and we'll recap our thoughts on the up and down 4 game series for the Mets. Jacob deGrom pitched his lights out, seemingly back to form. The offense, however, reverted back to not supporting our ace. Will he ever get the support he deserves?
Our closer Edwin Diaz, albeit in a tie game each time, took his first 2 losses of the year. As much as logic dictates you want your best reliever out there in those situations, they continuously have a tendency to pitch less than stellar. Should managers continue to run their closers out there in tie games?
Meanwhile, our former closer turned 8th inning man Jeurys Familia blew the save on Edwin Diaz's offday and was subsequently placed on the IL with shoulder soreness. Has his issues this year all been injury based or just a case of not handling the transition to his new role?
That plus much, much more! We'll also naturally talk about the players to wear number 24 in Mets history, and briefly the NY NL legacy year of 1924.
So, join us at 9pm ET for the latest edition of A Metsian Podcast!

The Curse of Ike Davis is Thwarted...For Now

First of all, start this post off by watching this video.

We are already reminded of the things we will miss from Mr. Isaac Benjamin Davis in his first couple games as a Pittsburgh Pirate. Personally, I feel Ike has star quality, and with the type of star quality that could have soared in New York. I have stated many a times on here that I have a "The Duda" jersey. My preference, however, has been Ike Davis at 1st base. I have faith The Duda can do what we want him to do in this lineup, and he's actually not too shabby at 1st, but I wish Ike Davis where still a part of this team. With the way the team fell flat on their face minutes after learning he was no longer a Met, they probably felt the same way before eventually moving on.

They hadn't yet Friday night, but Saturday night, they had a bit more energy by the end of the game when they started to rally, but of course fell short. They pulled it out on Sunday in the 14th, and if there was anyone in need of a game-winning sac fly, it was Curtis Granderson. Hopefully that clears the head.

The Mets now look like, over the course of 18 games, what they've generally looked like since 2011.

Home: 3-6
Road: 6-3

There's many ways to theorize why this is, some of which Mike and I did on the Rising Apple Report last night. Along with wrapping up the series in general, we talked about Citi Field, the Mets franchise as a whole, and a random-but-not-so-random-in-context Knicks/Nets rant from Mr. Lecolant. A great way to wrap up a weekend of baseball that had its ups and downs...as always, really.

The Cardinals series coming up, followed up by a Marlins series I'm probably more worried about. This should be an interesting next 7 games. Maybe there'll be a new shortstop on the other side of it since 1st base got cleared up finally....Sigh.

The bottom line is always....

The "Cavalry" Marches Home...

It's been a weird week, hence the lack of posts, but I couldn't let an off day go without getting a podcast in. Mike Lecolant joined me, along with author Matt Silverman (New York Mets: The Complete Illustrated History and 100 Things Mets Fans Should Know and Do Before They Die) and Rich Sparago in the latter half of the show. We talked about the recent road trip, Dillon Gee's workhorse nature, the 1969 New York Mets squad, Matt's books, Shea Stadium and its 50th Anniversary yesterday, Anthony Recker "cashing in for his backup catcher union card", Gene Mauch... and many many other Metsian items of interest.

Happy to have games back in Queens, and ones that celebrate at the Shea-tastic price of $3.50 (well...plus those online fees, but still, much much cheaper. That would be very SHEA of them to remove the fees, but I understand there's some annoying web code to be written to get what is usually there out of there. Yeah. 1964 it ain't.)

It's clearly redundant to say, but they HAVE to start winning at home if they are to take the next step. Why since 2011 they have sucked at home and done what winning teams do on the road, which is go .500 or one better, I have no idea. No idea why where they should feel more comfortable they have not and lost. But it has to change. Maybe celebrating some Mets history will bring some relaxation and get us some W's against the Braves, the Cardinals or the Marlins!

Enjoy the weekend, folks. MAKE IT OUT TO THE METS AT WILLETS POINT!!!

CITY. BASEBALL.

A Walk with WOR & the Post-Game Podcast

I do not mean to mislead anyone who read that title and is familiar with my occasional storytelling ways. I do not have an overly thorough story to tell about walking around Manhattan listening to Howie Rose and Josh Lewin on WOR during the Mets 6-4 series-sealing victory last night. That's basically all I did, enjoyed the scenery, enjoyed those voices and the baseball they described, and especially enjoyed the win.

I got home basically right as the last 7 pitches of the ballgame were beginning by Jose Valverde, and, as seen by that number of pitches, the inning didn't last too long. Right afterwards, I decided to spontaneously go on the air with Mike Lecolant of Rising Apple and talk about the Mets series win, as well as 1968 a bit (as it was our 68th episode, and there is no uniform number 68 in Mets history.)

We are settling in well to this new era of the Rising Apple Report and we went a solid hour and 10 last night, with Rising Apple site editor Danny Abriano joining us basically at midnight.

So, as the weekend creeps closer, enjoy the sounds this afternoon of the Rising Apple Report!

Settling in to the Longer Podcasts

Earlier in the day yesterday, I had a spur of the moment thought that some of us at Rising Apple ought to get on a podcast in the evening to fill the Metsian day-off void.

So, I was back in hosting duties, even with my Mets-induced hoarse voice, after a few weeks off with Mike Lecolant joining me as well. AND at the last second, Mets Musings' Gary Mack was able to call in. We recapped the weekend that gave us 2 Mets wins and one more Mets loss, no real resolution at the 1st base position, Bobby Parnell's decision to undergo Tommy John Surgery, the first replay challenge (and successful one) in Mets history, Juan Lagares and his continuing solid ABs, Curtis Granderson's first Mets home run, and plenty of other items of interest we discussed in the 93 minutes we were on air.

Also, since there is no #67 in Mets uniform history, we discussed Tom Seaver and his Rookie of the Year campaign in 1967.

I gotta say, I am REALLY liking having more time on this podcast thingy.

So, do yourself a favor while you settle into this day and listen to the musings on the Rising Apple Report!

Clem Labine Family Friend Endorses Jacoby Ellsbury

That's a bit of a misleading comment, because Rick Elliott, family friend of the late Brooklyn Dodger and '62 Met Clem Labine, endorses the free agent outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury to stay on the Boston Red Sox.

Somebody reached out to me regarding Mr. Elliott, saying he would be perfect for my Bedford & Sullivan podcast, and they were right. Rick has a plethora of information regarding growing up following the Dodgers in Woonsocket, RI, where Clem is from. Clem found work in the early 40's at Rick's father's garment factory, and worked closely with the family business till they closed their doors in the 80's. Rick has been more than receptive, and has wanted to share some of Clem's memorabilia that got passed down to him when Clem died in 2008.

Though this post is mostly regarding what he had to say about Ellsbury, here is Mr. Elliott's podcast episode for your listening pleasure when you get a chance.

On that podcast, I mentioned I was a Mets fan, and Rick said because Clem finished his career with the Mets, he'll "forgive" me. Soon thereafter, I got a letter in the mail from Rick saying he wanted me to have the signed postcard on the right.

Ain't that neat? It's unfortunate that Clem only made it into 4 innings as a Met, posting an 11.25 ERA before calling it a fantastic career that included 3 world championships ('55 BK, '59 LA, '60 PITT) mostly as one of the early fireman in Major League history. Still swell, though, that he was able to close it out back in town.

(Rick has sent me another awesome item regarding Jackie Robinson that I will show you all at a later date...)

Anyway, Rick and I have chatted a bunch, including via text. We were doing so the night the Red Sox won the World Series, something you can guess Rick was ecstatic about being a New England resident. The text chain eventually led to talk about John Henry the next day, which led to talk about Jacoby, and Rick has given me permission to quote him on here. Here's some of the text chain:

Rick: "...Henry will let Ellsbury slip away 2 Seattle...And if that occurs Henry must be drawn & quartered."

Me: "Hahahah. So, regarding that, it seems you believe he is worth the contract? Not saying I don't, just curious as a potential suitor."

Rick: "Every penny. He owns center field. He is rugged and resilient...a quiet and calm and peaceful man adding stability. Excellent hitter...always on base distracting pitchers...brilliant baserunner. And Sam stats can lie. Take 50 stolen & those walks and singles become doubles & he actually leads the MLB in slugging %. Tell you what, Henry, sell ur freakin' soccer team with Lebron and pay my center fielder what he needs."

Rick: ".....Or Sam...put me down as undecided! :-) But I adore Ells and what he brings. A great stable racehorse."

Me: "That's good to know. Us Mets fans have been wary of him..."

Rick: "...Remember Sam his rep for softness is a crock. He was put into left field to make room for 12 million dollar mistake named Cameron...Though unfamiliar there he was willing to play and collided with Beltre & broke ribs front & back. He had to heal. He did. He's a gamer and tough kid."

Me: "Haha that's how everyone refers to Mike Cameron."
Me: "We need (gamers.)"

Yes. Rick has a bit of a man crush on Jacoby Ellsbury, but makes some good points about the player. We should probably still be weary of the guy, as honestly we should be leary of any long-term contract. Us Met fans are conditioned to believe that no big contract will work out well based on our history. We got a lot out of Carlos Beltran, but still missed a couple years in there as well.

Based off of what Rick says about the guy, though, I am now less weary of signing Jacoby Ellsbury.

But Rick also said the following:

"...Ells is a west coast kid. If Sox don't smarten up & pay him, Boras will probably get him deal in Seattle. He LOVES WEST COAST...He's quiet and reserved. Might try to avoid NY. Even Boston took time for him to adjust.

"(But he's) a dream athlete. A miracle in motion!"

...as I said. Man crush.

Anyway, here's the Random Song of the Day.

SIGN. THE. RIGHT. GUY.
LET'S. GO. METS.

Catchin' You Up on All the Podcasts

There have been a slew of podcasts that I haven't been posting in here, and I'll start with the latest of the Rising Apple Report.

...After telling you that legendary talk show host Larry King will be on my Bedford & Sullivan Podcast once more at 2PM ET to discuss the Playoffs, and of course, Dem Bums.

Now, back to the Report! Unfortunately, the beat got to the "Mets will not pursue Jose Abreu" headline AFTER we talked about it for 5 minutes on the show, but that doesn't take away from the great debate and conversation we had. On top of that, we discussed the Jumped-Over-the-Final-Hurdle Willets Point Development project, the arbitration-eligible players the Mets have, and Matt Harvey's decision to have the Tommy John Surgery.

And after you listen to that one, give yourself a taste of New York National League History, staying active listeners in the research process of my developing HBO-Style Brooklyn Dodgers TV Series! Highlights down below include Pitcher Carl Erskine discussing the '55 season on the 58th Anniversary of their Game 7 win over the Yankees, Polo Grounds visitor's clubhouse bat boy Richie McCabe with a slew of stories about the '54 and '55 NY Baseball Giants' seasons, and Dodgers Team Historian Mark Langill discussing Leo Durocher, Larry MacPhail and the early 40's era of Brooklyn Dodgers baseball!

'Tis what 'Tis

In the case of the Mets this week, you take the split, and each a solid win at that.

I haven't even been able to watch the Mets clips of yesterday. I was in transit to Coney Island during the game to get to the ballpark early for the Ebbets Field 100th Anniversary jerseys. Besides a fantastic win by the Mets, the Cyclones beat the Yankees 2-1, with a fantastic 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

It's been a combination of more on my plate and lack of motivation to be writing about the Mets everyday, but I appreciate all of you returning when I do. I'm getting into balancing my new schedule a bit better, so there should be some more posts on the way as September rolls around.

The Rising Apple Report, and a great episode at that, is down below, and I am also going live on air with screenwriter Ron Main on the Bedford & Sullivan podcast at 1:30PM ET today. We'll discuss Ron growing up a Dodger fan in Queens, his parents' roots in Brooklyn, and his favorite player, Duke Snider. We will also discuss the current screenwriting landscape in Hollywood, as well as the film industry in general.

Have a great Labor Day weekend, folks.

Rarely an Off-Day These Days

I really don't want to write too much.

I know I'll go into a rant about Terry Collins or umpiring or something, other than what I really want to focus on, which is Tuesday's game and the BOMB of an insurance run my boy Ike slammed into the Pepsi Porch.

I did plenty of ranting about a bunch of stuff with Andrew Battifarano on last night's Rising Apple Report, so just go ahead and listen to that as you settle into your Thursday.

Enjoy the off-day, everyone (as much as you can enjoy a day with no Mets Baseball.)

Returning the Favor

It thrills me beyond belief that the Mets swept the Colorado Rockies after losing 8 straight to them at Citi Field (not to mention after they got swept out in Colorado, not counting that makeup game we won.)

The last time the Rockies won a game at Citi Field was Collin McHugh's Major League Debut, where he took a no-decision in the Mets 1-0 loss.

He was traded for Eric Young, Jr.

The Mets have clearly needed to win A LOT MORE at home, and it looked to be a thrilling week out in Flushing. It's not even they needed to win more....they needed to stop being 10 GAMES UNDER at home. They need to feed off the energy returning, and this series was a prime example of what it should feel like for the fan and the team at Citi Field.

Shall we take a quick look at some of the highlights?

Those uniforms are so awesome.

Hey, eh, how bout Matt Harvey's first career Shutout?

And how bout a lil pitching and small ball to get the job done?

Oh...It looks like that last game that finished the sweep with a 2-1 score does not have any embedding. Yeah, it wasn't as Baller as those last two highlight reels, but still a solid, solid win (and in those lovely blue unis with the Orange and Blue hat, too.)

It's ok, though. You all know where to find the highlights if you're craving them.

Now, it's time for a series in Phoenix. Keep it up, Metsies.

OH! I guess I can't leave this portion of the post without talking about Wilmer Flores...

AWESOME JOB IN YOUR FIRST SERIES, WILMER.

Anyway, before I embed this week's Rising Apple Report, where Andrew Battifarano and Jason Mast made their Report debuts, I point you to this link as well, where Larry King will once again join me on the Bedford & Sullivan Podcast, today at 1:30PM ET, to discuss an average Brooklyn summer day for lil Larry in the late 1930's, the conversations in the borough streets at that time, more stories from the seats of Ebbets Field, and why Bobby Thompson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" trumps all others as the most devastating walk-off home run in the history of baseball.

Make sure to tune in at 1:30PM ET.

The Pity Party

Before the last 2 losses, we discussed on the Rising Apple Report a bit about Matt Harvey and how everybody around much feel this extra pressure to perform for him.

You got the opposition getting geared up to face the kid, the pitcher especially upping his game.

You got the offense pressing.

You got Matt Harvey feeling no margin for error.

Yesterday pretty much summed up Matt Harvey's season, and the way the Mets produce around him. I don't know what the number of people left on base was, but I know it was outlandish by the 3rd inning alone.

Anyway, that same Rising Apple Report I mentioned can be found below...

And also, today at 9:30AM EST, Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Carl Erskine, aka "Oisk," will be a very special guest on the Bedford & Sullivan podcast at 9:30AM EST.

So there's that...

Anyway, enjoy your Friday, folks.

Kerplunk.

I guess it should be considered a good thing that I missed a game post, and a winning one at that. Considering I'm in the last week of classes specializing in a field I expect to make a career, it's good to be distracted from the item that normally does the distracting.

Though last night, I had enough gameday in my view to be well aware of the inning that got away. I haven't seen any video or heard any audio, but I did hear that Eric Young, Jr. and Tim Hudson got into a crazy accident during the 8-2 loss. That sucks, 'cause I respect the guy, you know?

Alright, before I add last night's awesome Rising Apple Report podcast, with myself, Dan Haefeli and Rich Sparago, let's look at last night's lineup and consider its strikeout potential at the bottom.

Starting Lineups

I don't even want to show you how many strikeouts it was, though it's nothing insane. I just read about some strikeouts that lead to a rally-kill.

It REALLY sucks that Hef has had two bad starts in a row, but I'm not about to jump to any conclusions considering.

Considering...

OH! Last question: What the Los Mets' All-Time Record?

Seriously, I don't know, but I somehow remember a bunch of them being losses...

That is all.

Here's the Rising Apple Report.

LET'S. GO. METS.
