Consistency

I haven't been consistent with this blog, and neither have the Mets.

Well...the way I phrased it, it sounds like the Mets haven't been consistent in writing on my blog, but you get my drift.

The Mets haven't been consistent with anything.
When they hit, they don't pitch. When they pitch, they don't hit.

The 2-1 games have older Mets fans flashing back to 1971.

And games like Matt Harvey's 8-5 loss have them flashing back to Game 7 of '73.

The last thing the Mets have been is consistent.

Except consistently in 1st place.

It was ironic to randomly check in on the Washington/Milwaukee game when I did Thursday night. The Mets had long walked off, salvaging a horrendous series to their Orange Ancestors, a series in which an asshole could argue contains the only no-hitter in Citi Field history. I hadn't even acknowledged on this blog the 3rd anniversary of the greatest baseball game I ever attended, and here's some rookie with the same last name as the man who played Moses putting an exclamation point on how inept the Mets offense has gotten before I could mark the former on here.

Back, however, to the midwest, where I was happy to find Bob Uecker call a game as well as ever. The score 6-5 Brew Crew, who had staved off an early Nats swarm to chip away and eventually take a lead into the 9th...with none other than Frankie Rodriguez on the mound to save it. Though he gave up a 2-out hit to Ian Desmond, he got 3 ground ball outs to...um...propel? the Mets back in front of the team they beat.

What a weird season this 2015 has been.

It's June 12th. The season is long. And we could all use a little more consistency in our lives.

But at least we're currently in first place.

Cheers to that.

Let's see if we ever take off.

LET'S. FLY. HIGH. NOW.
LET'S. GO. METS.

GET US SOME BULLPEN HELP ALREADY!!!

I sat there in a decked out sports bar called Standings, where every known team paraphernalia was hanging from the ceiling or plastered on the wall. The Mets had miraculously gone ahead on Jordany Valdespin's home run, only to see Bobby Parnell (who had thrown 8 straight breaking pitches on the outside part of the plate before throwing a fastball there to Danny Espinosa, who handled it like he was painting a Monet) blow the lead. Then, the Mets were given another shot when Josh Thole plated Daniel Murphy in the top half of the 10th, only to see Tim Byrdak and Pedro Beato completely destroy the lead in the bottom half. When it was all said and done, I wish I could only blame the offense's inability to get the tying run home from scoring position and none out early on. The Mets lost 4-5, in the most possible demoralizing way.

There's no point to 2nd guess decisions made here and there because it won't make a difference. What WILL make a difference is a competent bullpen arm. This team (sans 8 players) is clearly capable of winning ball games. It's not like we haven't had a chance to win at least 3 of the 5 games we've lost the last week. This team has not come this far to only see it completely washed away by a bullpen who can NEVER get the job done. 19 LOSSES!!!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I understand nobody can just call up another team and say, "I WANT THIS GUY!!!" But we can't wait around for the trade market to develop to get somebody in here who can competently stop blowing left column number increases from our record. Sandy owes it the players who fight night in and night out, and he owes it to us fans who have truly bought into this team. Do something. Get some other guys in here. I can't keep watching the same guys blow it all the time. (I really like the idea of bringing Frankie Rodriguez back in here. We brought him here to help us win and last year we weren't in a position to win. NOW WE ARE. I know he can't be the one "savior" but I believe he can help us. Say what you want about the guy. And say what you want about how dicey he made it feel sometimes in that 9th. He's clearly a much better pitcher than anybody we have out there. And he shouldn't cost us more than mid-level prospects.)

This team should have won last night. TWICE. They should have won many nights. And I'm sick of saying they didn't when they should have.

The Mets desperately need to win the next 2 games. (Hell, they need to win the next several.) They look to even up the Nationals series tonight, when Chris Young takes on Jordan Zimmermann at 7:05PM.

MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHTTTTTSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!

LET'S. GO. METS.

7 Scoreless from Miguel and a Win, but Not Before Uneasiness from Frankie

Amazingly, the Mets got 7 shutout innings from Miguel Batista, and with some more two-out hitting, a suicide squeeze and a botched rundown from Aramis Ramirez, the men from Flushing held on to beat the  Brew Crew of Milwaukee 3-1. After voicing confidence in his closer, Terry Collins sent Frank Francisco back out there in the 9th, and while he was able to lock down the save, he did anything but sure up concerns over his pitching.

Miguel Batista doesn’t have the greatest stuff in the world at age 41, but he’s crafty enough that he’ll hit the corners and nibble off the plate, and on this night, the Brewers were unable to square away on anything remotely near the strike zone. He pitched very well, but the shutout was most certainly helped out by the Brew Crew’s own ineptness. With none out in the 2nd inning, Taylor Green hit what should have been a single, but The Duda decided to lay out for it. Now, what I have seen from Lucas in the field this year is that he’ll get to the ball quite solidly on regular routine catches, he’ll motor it up when you need it (as he did on the last out of last night’s ball game) but he is not about to make the spectacular diving catch. He probably will leave his feet for one and catch it at some point, but on this particular play, you didn’t expect him to make the diving catch. The ball bounced behind him, he got up to retrieve it, and the batter made his way to 3rd on what was an err of judgment by The Duda (the official scorer decided as well.) Batista then got a key strikeout on former Brave Brooks Conrad, and then Cesar Izturis attempted a suicide squeeze, the runner from 3rd charging down the line. The bunt, however, was not one to be desired as it died right in front of Mike Nickeas. Green, on his way home, put on the brakes, turned around and was tagged out on his way back. This game and that play is representative of what good teams do: they take advantage of mistakes from the other team and execute the fundamentals, as we did in the 6th inning when we showed the Brewers how to perform the suicide squeeze for our 2nd run (Ronny Cedeno bunting in Daniel Murphy, who had 2 of the 3 Mets hits.)

Oh, Frankie, Frankie, Frank Francisco. On a night when our former Frankie pitched against us in the 9th, Francisco was sent back out there to show us he can get it together. He did anything but. Ryan Braun singled, stole second, Cory Hart drove him in, walk....yada, yada, yada....hard hit ball to Lucas Duda. Even that last out made you quiver, and with everyone on Orange and Blue high-fiving, I did not exactly feel pleased with the win. Maybe emotions are still running high with me and Frankie needed to battle through his mediocre stuff to gain the confidence to get back on track. Terry was most certainly uneasy as well, as he had Jon Rauch up in the bullpen pretty quickly into Frankie's outing. It will be interesting to monitor how Terry handles this situation, and more importantly, how Francisco handles it.

It is very nice, however, to see this team continue to brush the tough losses under the rug and come out battling the next night.

The Mets and Brewers are back at it at 7:10PM on T-shirt Tuesday (cool "Dudaism" shirt being handed out. Too bad I can't go.) Dillon Gee takes on Zack Greinke.

LET'S. GO. METS.

(So, my girlfriend hates it when I put disclaimers up here, but regardless: I have wanted desperately to get the 2nd part of my Danver trip up but have had setbacks. It will most certainly be posted by Friday. If you haven't yet, read Part 1 here.)
