The Voodoo Striketh Back

Well, that game didn't turn out exactly how we had hoped. Unlike the night before, The Big Bad Baseball Voodoo had affected the Metsian world once more.

After an hour of a 1-1 tie leading up to the 8:15 curtain, I went onstage and arrived back offstage to a 4-1 lead. I responded to an email from Greg Prince, saying,

"Its a lovely thing to leave a 1-1 tie to go on stage, then come back to a 4-1 lead. Keep it up, Mets."

The next time I updated At Bat, it was a 4-6 deficit.

"Well, I feel like a dunce."

With the score at 4-8 by the time we got back to the same bar from previous evenings, I wasn't about to ask for any College Football to be turned off. There was no "Top 10 Things We Love about Tim Tebow" on the NFL Channel I could put out of its misery. It was the At Bat or nothing.

Unfortunately, my phone is on its last legs and the At Bat was too much of a problem, so I put the device down and partook in some non-Metsian social interaction for a change.

Figuring the game was over, I later dropped in to the At Bat to see what the final result was.

"6-9. Great."

The most apathetic I've been all year.

Time for CY, though, to get us flyin' high.

Miller Park: The Anti-Voodoo

On the night of the second performance of The Zeal, and with the 1 train delayed because of "a police investigation at Christopher Street," the commencement of the evening happened around 10 minutes after the game's beginning. The Mets already had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out when I got to my At Bat plugged in underneath the stage, where there was a spot for me to follow what I could out of the way of everyone. With how the Mets have been scoring runs at home (or how they haven't been scoring runs) you'll take the RBI groundout by Ike. A greater bonus having The Duda...well...you know...Abide.

That was basically the way the evening went for me. Whenever I checked in, they would score immediately thereafter. Completely the opposite of every update I got during the week's rehearsals. The next time I got a chance to check up on the game after The Duda drove in Wright, the first update said, "In Play, run(s)," with Murph up. I thought to myself, "Man, I hope Murph just blasted a 2-runner." Sure enough, he had. While I also saw the Brew Crew score their runs via the words on the page, The Duda Abided once more for my next update, with his solo blast plastered across the screen the second I picked up the phone again. That top of the 6th was lovely. Josh Thole driving in Torres, Ruben Tejada driving in Thole. I had forgotten what the number 7 looked like.

Maybe we needed to be actually performing the show instead of rehearsing for the Mets to actually score some runs.

Maybe I needed to not check the At Bat in front of the Big Bad Baseball Gypsy, which is what I didn't do when I saw him walking by.

Maybe Citi Field is in some weird 2nd half-killing Bermuda Triangle or something.

Oooooooooorrr maaaaaaaaaaaaybeeeeeeeee the Mets just played the game of baseball better than the Brew Crew yesterday evening.

Oh, superstition.

Around the 6th or 7th inning, we got to a bar.

"Hey, bar..... Is there anyone watching the Tennis Channel or 10 Things We Love About Tim Tebow on the NFL Network? I'd love to watch the Mets Game."

My eyes can't roll back any further.

Back to Baseball and the Random Song of the Day

The Zeal of the Zealot opened last night and I was lucky to not have a baseball game to monitor. I will try as hard as I can to avoid the At Bat, but my phone will certainly be on standby. The game starts around the same time as the performance. I want wins, regardless of the possible turnover of players this offseason. Let's mess with the Brew Crew's chances. Let's get back to some solid baseball. Only 19 games to go. Enjoy it as much as you can, folks.

I'm off to the 2nd performance.

Here's the Random Song of the Day.

Well...Sometimes You Lose 8-0

Well, The Mets lost 8-0. Dillon Gee sucked, the team couldn't get anything goin' against Zack Greinke every time they tried and DJ Carrasco inexpicably got thrown out for tailing a fastball inside to Ryan Bruan after Rickie Weeks homered. Terry Collins was a little knee jerky and took David Wright out of the game, not wanting him to get hit. David Wright looked mad as hell and he wasn't gonna take it anymore and gave Terry Collins a piece of his mind. It all looked as if everybody reacted very emotionally in the moment, from the umpire to Terry to Wright. It was all very fascinating.

I'm off to the Terry Collins WFAN Breakfast so that is all I have to say on this game for now. Let's bounce back when Johan takes on Mike Leake tonight against the Reds at 7:10PM.

7 Scoreless from Miguel and a Win, but Not Before Uneasiness from Frankie

Amazingly, the Mets got 7 shutout innings from Miguel Batista, and with some more two-out hitting, a suicide squeeze and a botched rundown from Aramis Ramirez, the men from Flushing held on to beat the  Brew Crew of Milwaukee 3-1. After voicing confidence in his closer, Terry Collins sent Frank Francisco back out there in the 9th, and while he was able to lock down the save, he did anything but sure up concerns over his pitching.

Miguel Batista doesn’t have the greatest stuff in the world at age 41, but he’s crafty enough that he’ll hit the corners and nibble off the plate, and on this night, the Brewers were unable to square away on anything remotely near the strike zone. He pitched very well, but the shutout was most certainly helped out by the Brew Crew’s own ineptness. With none out in the 2nd inning, Taylor Green hit what should have been a single, but The Duda decided to lay out for it. Now, what I have seen from Lucas in the field this year is that he’ll get to the ball quite solidly on regular routine catches, he’ll motor it up when you need it (as he did on the last out of last night’s ball game) but he is not about to make the spectacular diving catch. He probably will leave his feet for one and catch it at some point, but on this particular play, you didn’t expect him to make the diving catch. The ball bounced behind him, he got up to retrieve it, and the batter made his way to 3rd on what was an err of judgment by The Duda (the official scorer decided as well.) Batista then got a key strikeout on former Brave Brooks Conrad, and then Cesar Izturis attempted a suicide squeeze, the runner from 3rd charging down the line. The bunt, however, was not one to be desired as it died right in front of Mike Nickeas. Green, on his way home, put on the brakes, turned around and was tagged out on his way back. This game and that play is representative of what good teams do: they take advantage of mistakes from the other team and execute the fundamentals, as we did in the 6th inning when we showed the Brewers how to perform the suicide squeeze for our 2nd run (Ronny Cedeno bunting in Daniel Murphy, who had 2 of the 3 Mets hits.)

Oh, Frankie, Frankie, Frank Francisco. On a night when our former Frankie pitched against us in the 9th, Francisco was sent back out there to show us he can get it together. He did anything but. Ryan Braun singled, stole second, Cory Hart drove him in, walk....yada, yada, yada....hard hit ball to Lucas Duda. Even that last out made you quiver, and with everyone on Orange and Blue high-fiving, I did not exactly feel pleased with the win. Maybe emotions are still running high with me and Frankie needed to battle through his mediocre stuff to gain the confidence to get back on track. Terry was most certainly uneasy as well, as he had Jon Rauch up in the bullpen pretty quickly into Frankie's outing. It will be interesting to monitor how Terry handles this situation, and more importantly, how Francisco handles it.

It is very nice, however, to see this team continue to brush the tough losses under the rug and come out battling the next night.

The Mets and Brewers are back at it at 7:10PM on T-shirt Tuesday (cool "Dudaism" shirt being handed out. Too bad I can't go.) Dillon Gee takes on Zack Greinke.

LET'S. GO. METS.

(So, my girlfriend hates it when I put disclaimers up here, but regardless: I have wanted desperately to get the 2nd part of my Danver trip up but have had setbacks. It will most certainly be posted by Friday. If you haven't yet, read Part 1 here.)
