The Exhausting West Coast

I was totally up for the first game in LA, but I've been feeling under the weather recently and clearly it annoyed me as much as anybody regarding the Mets defense and the bad umpiring.

The 2nd game, I was near Gameday, but mostly avoided the happenings after checking in on it right before Matt Harvey fell apart with only a 1-0 lead.

And the 3rd game...Well, I conked out right after hearing LaTroy give up the tying run, checking the score when I woke up.

So, it was nice to hear the Mets get some go-ahead and winning runs in last night, even though I was halfway in and out in a Benadryl stupor.

Though I am looking forward to hearing the game when I get off from work tonight, I expect sleep will come along with it as well, hopefully waking up when Howie yells, "Put it in the books!"

Sometimes You Catch The Best Moments

I had thought of going yesterday, joining my cousin, my uncle and my aunt at the game for Father's Day, but I made the practical decision for my wallet and work that I had to stay home and get some stuff done for school.

I listened to a bit, but only 3 of 9 innings, where the other 6 were monitored by the Gameday.

By the time I checked in on the 9th, there were 2 on, a run had already scored (I hadn't yet been privy to Marlon Byrd's mammoth 2nd Decker to left that added us to the board), and there were no out. With Omar Quintanilla up and my iPhone attached to our television via Apple TV's AirPlay, MLB Gameday offered myself and others checking in a "Live LookIn." For a moment, I had SNY like millions of others.

Q got the bunt down, and I had an internal struggle regarding the strategy. "Why waste an out when the offense has been so bad and a strikeout artist on his way to the plate?" "But the offense has been struggling so much, you want that tying run as close to the plate as possible." Things along those lines went through my head.

Turns out none of that mattered, because Kirk Nieuwenhuis crushed the 2nd Carlos Marmol pitch into the Pepsi Porch.

My jaw flew open.

I couldn't believe what I saw.

Kirk, as he rounded 2nd, looked back at his gathering teammates with the most baller look on his face.

The Live LookIn ended itself before Kirk even got to 3rd.

It happened so fast, it felt like a dream.


I may be wrong, but I believe that is the 1st ever walk-off home run in Citi Field where the Mets were down more than 1 run. If my memory serves me correctly, the Mets had never hit a walk-off home run at Citi Field where they were behind at all, even by only a run.

Trivia to check up on at some point today.

Reviewing Your Metsian Weekend

On Saturday, the Mets staged a nice lil Spring comeback, down 7-3 to lock up an 8-8 tie (nobody cared to play the 10th.) Highlights from this include Matt Harvey's sharp outing, Cowgill and Ruben at the top of the lineup, good showing by the bullpen, The Duda's center field bomb and Brian Bixler's game-tying 2-run jack. Bixler is a very interesting candidate for backup infielder and has certainly performed better than others in the running, such as Brandom Hicks. Though Omar Quintanilla is being very Omar Quintanilla-ish (he is a Mets Legend, after all.) Anyway, the details are always awesome to run through, so check out Matt Musico's recap over at Rising Apple.

Yesterday, the Mets did not have as good of a showing, as they gave up a 4-0 lead to lose to the Marlins 6-4. I had my first "Oh, great" superstitious moment of the year, if you will, for I tuned into the WFAN broadcast with a 4-2 lead only to pretty much instantly hear that lead go to the wayside. Still, it was very nice to hear the voices of Josh Lewin, Eddie C. (and even Duquette.) I like Lewin. I think he fits in nicely next to Howie. He doesn't feel like an outsider the way Wayne Hagan did to me and other fans, though I didn't mind him. Lewin has his own distinct voice and style, and it seems to match up well with the harmony that is Mets Broadcasting. Anyway, highlights include Gee's fine outing, John Buck's 3-run shot and Nieuwenhuis's knee injury,  the severity of which is unknown. Interesting tidbits about some prospects in this game as well, so once again check out Musico's recap over at Rising Apple.

David Wright took off for the World Baseball Classic, which got underway this weekend with some fun matchups over in Asia. I know its slightly a polarizing thing, but as far as I'm concerned the concept is great and that translates on the field. Though they couldn't win a game this weekend, I had a fun time watching and rooting for the Brazilian team, which is managed by Barry Larkin. I also am rooting big time for the Netherlands, who unfortunately, after taking down Korea in the first game, could not beat Chinese Tapei, who already have 2 wins under their belt early on. Their fans, who packed the stands for the latter game in Taiwan, certainly know how to root for their Home Team. I'm pumped for these contests, and can't wait for the USA team to get going.

Sidenote: Though they did not make it past the qualifying round, how awesome is the Israeli baseball cap?

Well...Sometimes You Lose 8-0

Well, The Mets lost 8-0. Dillon Gee sucked, the team couldn't get anything goin' against Zack Greinke every time they tried and DJ Carrasco inexpicably got thrown out for tailing a fastball inside to Ryan Bruan after Rickie Weeks homered. Terry Collins was a little knee jerky and took David Wright out of the game, not wanting him to get hit. David Wright looked mad as hell and he wasn't gonna take it anymore and gave Terry Collins a piece of his mind. It all looked as if everybody reacted very emotionally in the moment, from the umpire to Terry to Wright. It was all very fascinating.

I'm off to the Terry Collins WFAN Breakfast so that is all I have to say on this game for now. Let's bounce back when Johan takes on Mike Leake tonight against the Reds at 7:10PM.

Through the Static, Another 1-run Game Between the Mets and the Giants

Yesterday, a friend and I helped family bring a couch to an upstate house. With the furniture sticking out of the unfortunately undersized U-Haul on the New York State Thruway, I had the game going on my At-Bat App through the Bluetooth of the car. Frank Francisco kept getting behind batters in the 9th inning with a 4-1 lead, and along with Met fans listening and watching all over, Terry Collins grew tired of the act and went to Jon Rauch to truly close it out. With the score 4-2 and two on, I heard Howie Rose tell me of a ball popped up in the Bermuda Triangle of fielders. Ruben Tejada went back, Daniel Murphy went back, Kirk Nieuwenhuis came forward. Ruben couldn't situate himself and Kirk called him off at the last second, only to overshoot the ball, allowing the 2 base runners to score for a 4-4 tie. I sat there shaking my head while making sure I didn't let the emotions get the best of me while driving. Are we really on our way to another Mets Giants extra-inning game?

We got off the highway to get onto a route, making our way into the mountains 20 minutes south of Albany near Coxsackie. As the Mets were threatening in the 9th inning, the At Bat lost coverage, and I scrambled to see if the 660 frequency was picked up at all out there. The static was louder than Howie, but the man could still be heard, though slightly. We turned off the Route onto the backroads of the country, and Howie's voice went in and out, out and in, the static growing louder and quieter, quieter and louder. Through the rolling, hilly roads, we climbed and climbed, and all of a sudden I hear Howie go, "...And the Mets win the game 5-4. We'll be right back to recap the events. This is the WFAN Mets radio network." Uh...Ok. That's great. How'd that go down? I switched back over to see if At Bat was working, knowing it is usually about a minute behind the real feed. Sure enough, it was back on, and Past-Howie informed me of the Buster Posey throw down the right-field line, allowing Ruben Tejada to score for a 5-4 Mets win.

Well, that's awesome.
