Pocket Schedule

If you're looking for examples that things are changing around the Mets, look no further than the advertising.

They don't seem to be trying too hard the way they seemed to in the past. Gone is, "The Magic is Back!" or "New Team, New Year, New Magic!" or "Catch the Excitement in Queens!" or all the one-liners that people would chuckle at and then make up a one-liner about how much the Mets suck. I haven't seen the Mets advertising so simplistic; with this advertisement to the right, as well as others where its just said "Mets (the logo) - Get your tickets now!"

With this "pocket schedule" (as I am calling it since in this day and age we can take a photo with our phone and refer to that schedule throughout the year) instead of a photo of Ruben Tejada and a one-liner, the Mets are just saying, "Here's the schedule. Head out to the ballpark when you can." Of course, the Mets play will heavily weigh on the attendance of even those who have considered themselves "die-hards" over the years, but it seems the Mets finally understand that flashy and forced advertising isn't what is going to get people out to the ballpark; it's winning. So, might as well not try too hard and just let people know that the Mets will be playing baseball soon. Once we are winning, people will look at the schedule and pick a date.

It's pretty surreal that there's a real baseball game today (and the rain's supposed to clear up, so we should be getting a game in.) The calendar hasn't even turned to April yet. 

Weird. 

But whatever. Never too early to begin. As stated on Rising Apple this morning, I am always pumped for baseball Metropolitan-style, so cue up the marching band and get that Star-Spangled Banner underway.

Part the skies, and clear up the rain. 

Mets baseball is back, time to sing again...

Back in the WiFi Groove with a Julian's Met

This week, with the former Mets catcher's birthday only two days ago, Julian and his dad picked Charlie O'Brien's Upper Deck '93 as the Julian's Met of the Week.

This is it and the Song of the Day

Well, fellow Metsian folk, we have arrived at game 162. In an alternate universe, the 2012 Miami Marlins and the 2012 New York Mets are tied for the division lead heading into this afternoon's match-up, and one will avoid a one-game wild card playoff. Unfortunately, that's not the way it is, but that doesn't mean we can't have fun for another 9 innings before grudgingly giving way to non-Orange-and-Blue playoffs, which will be pretty awesome per usual once our sighs go away.

(Oh, just so I don't completely miss it, his abdomen was ripped THE ENTIRE TIME?!)

I've been preparing for the offseason by getting knee deep in New York: A Documentary Film, as I've mentioned here recently. It is absolutely fantastic, and I advise you all prepare for your offseason the same way. We're gonna need something to do when there's no Mets baseball on. Might as well ride these epic documentaries out. It is a fascinating, atmospheric look at how certain decisions for one region can send history soaring towards where we are today, including our Orange and Blue history. For there are no Metropolitans without the Metropolis.

I just wrapped up Episode 3, which takes us to the end of the 19th Century. They detail a song about the ole neighborhood that became "one of the most popular songs ever written about New York City." As the tune began, I noticed familiar notes that sing, "East Side/West Side," which our excellent Mets tune obviously paid homage to when it was time to record in the early 1960's.

First, since I'm feeling a little melancholy, here is the actual documentary version of the song.

Enjoy game 162 everyone.
